Toddler Travel Essentials We Actually Use (and Won't Travel Without)
Traveling with babies and toddlers can feel overwhelming. Between the snacks, diapers, toys, extra clothes, and all of the gear that somehow accompanies a tiny human, it's easy to wonder if leaving home is worth the effort.
13 months old at Fort Lauderdale International
But after countless road trips, airport sprints, and flights with our daughter, I've learned that the right plan and a handful of reliable products can make travel days significantly smoother. At this point, whether I'm traveling solo with our daughter or we're adventuring together as a family, I have the diaper bag down to a science. In fact, my travel checklist has earned a permanent spot on my phone and never gets deleted.
These are the toddler travel essentials we actually use, love, and continue to pack trip after trip.
Staying Organized Is Key
Freshly Picked Diaper Bag
If there is one thing I've learned, it's that staying organized is half the battle. Find a diaper bag you love!
I've been using my Freshly Picked diaper bag for the last year and a half, and I genuinely have zero complaints. It survived the newborn days when I packed everything imaginable and has transitioned seamlessly into toddler life. At this point, it has probably logged nearly as many flights as my daughter.
The thoughtfully designed compartments make it easy to keep everything in its place, which becomes especially important when you're juggling a child, luggage, boarding passes, and your morning coffee.
It's also where I keep snacks for everyone. We can all relate to being hangry, and those are not the vibes we're aiming for on an already busy travel day. Having a stash of kid-friendly snacks and a few options for the adults means we aren't dependent on airport food lines or rushed layovers.
Packing Cubes
I recently started using packing cubes, and I can confidently say I'm never going back.
Not only do they keep our luggage organized, but they also prevent the chaos that happens when your toddler discovers your carefully folded suitcase and decides everything belongs on the floor.
If you know, you know.
They make it easier to find what you need, unpack quickly, and keep everyone's belongings separated throughout the trip.
Handheld Fan & Flashlight
One item I never expected to become a travel favorite is a small handheld fan that doubles as a flashlight.
Last summer, we were stuck on a plane sitting on the tarmac for hours with very little air circulation. By the time we landed, I had already decided I needed a better solution for future trips.
Hot toddlers tend to become unhappy toddlers rather quickly. Having a portable fan makes a noticeable difference when you're waiting in airports, standing in long lines, or dealing with unexpected delays.
The flashlight has also proven surprisingly useful for locating dropped toys, snacks, pacifiers, and whatever else inevitably disappears beneath airplane seats.
Light Layers
This may not be a specific product recommendation, but it deserves a place on every travel packing list.
Airports, airplanes, hotels, and road trips all seem to operate at wildly different temperatures. Lightweight layers make it easy to adjust throughout the day and help keep everyone comfortable without overpacking.
MAMAZING Lightweight Baby Travel Stroller
We're an UPPAbaby family, and I absolutely love our Vista stroller for everyday life.
However, after one trip left my stroller looking a little worse for wear, I started searching for something smaller, lighter, and less expensive for travel. At the same time, I didn't want to sacrifice appearance or comfort.
That's when I found the MAMAZING Lightweight Baby Travel Stroller.
It has made travel significantly easier. I can gate-check it without worry, and if there's room on the plane, it can fit in the overhead compartment. It also takes up much less space in the trunk during road trips, which is incredibly helpful when every square inch of storage seems to be occupied.
For the price, it's been one of our best travel purchases.
TushBaby Hip Carrier + Snug Attachment
13 months at the airport in North Carolina
If I had to choose a single MVP from this list, it would probably be the TushBaby Hip Carrier.
I've traveled quite a bit solo with my daughter, and the ability to carry her hands-free has been a complete game changer.
When you're managing luggage, a stroller, a car seat, snacks, boarding passes, and a toddler, every free hand matters.
I love that I can keep my wallet, snacks, and her water bottle easily accessible while still carrying her comfortably. She can face inward when she's tired or outward when she's feeling social and wants to wave at every traveler who walks by.
It's one of those products that makes me wonder how I ever traveled through life without it.
UPPAbaby Aria Infant Car Seat
Our earliest trips were with the UPPAbaby Aria infant car seat.
One of the biggest benefits was not needing to travel with a separate base. When you're already carrying what feels like your entire house through an airport, every little convenience matters.
It served us incredibly well during the baby stage and made those first family adventures much easier.
Toddler Car Seat: Graco TrioGrow SnugLock 3-in-1 Car Seat
Once our daughter outgrew her infant seat, we transitioned to the Evenflo Revolve360.
For everyday life, I am completely obsessed with the swivel feature. Getting her in and out of the car is effortless, and I wish every car seat worked this way. Unfortunately, after one solo trip, I quickly realized just how heavy the seat and base were for airport travel. I was sweating!
That's when I started looking for a dedicated travel option. After plenty of research, we landed on the Graco TrioGrow SnugLock 3-in-1 Car Seat.
It's significantly lighter than our everyday seat and doesn't require a separate base, making travel days much more manageable.
I also appreciated that it would continue growing with our daughter rather than needing another replacement down the road.
TUGUAN Car Seat Travel Bag
Once we found the right travel car seat, the next challenge became transporting it.
After what felt like endless searching, I came across the TUGUAN Car Seat Travel Bag with spinner wheels.
I've traveled with it several times now, and it has genuinely made airport navigation easier. I can comfortably wear it as a backpack or attach it to my rolling luggage and pull everything together through the terminal.
For our family, it was worth every penny.
One important consideration with any travel bag is checking the dimensions of your car seat before purchasing. Not all bags fit all “standard” seats. And don't forget: car seats and strollers are generally exempt from checked baggage fees. If you plan to use your car seat during the flight, be sure to confirm that it is FAA-approved before traveling.
Entertainment & Comfort
I love traveling because it allows our family to experience new places together. But let's be honest: without a little planning, parents often spend more time managing logistics than actually enjoying the trip.
I don't believe travel should only be fun for the kids. The goal is for everyone to enjoy the experience.
For us, that means preparing ahead of time while also accepting that travel with children requires a healthy amount of flexibility.
Small Toys & Books
One of the simplest ways we keep travel days running smoothly is by bringing a small rotation of toys and books.
I typically pack at least three small toys and one favorite book for flights.
These same toys end up being useful throughout the trip at restaurants, coffee shops, hotel rooms, and vacation rentals.
And no, this doesn't have to mean an iPad glued to your child for hours. Although, if that's what gets your family through a travel day, absolutely no judgment from me. Sometimes parenting is survival.
Silicone Stroller & High Chair Straps
One of my favorite parenting hacks since the baby stage has been silicone stroller and high-chair straps.
I attach one end to a toy and the other to the stroller, car seat, or even my wrist when necessary. When my daughter inevitably tosses something across the plane, I don't have to crawl under seats searching for it.
People sitting near us on the plane often laugh because she would drop a toy and I'd simply lift my arm, magically returning it to her lap.
It's a small item that saves a surprising amount of frustration.
Pacifier Clips
Pacifier clips have been another unexpectedly versatile travel item.
During infancy, they saved me from constantly cleaning pacifiers that ended up on airplane floors and airport terminals.
As my daughter grew out of pacifiers, I simply attached silicone teething toys instead. Same concept. Same sanity-saving results.
Bandou Original Toddler Headphones
6 months old flying to Maine
Finding headphones that work well for babies and toddlers can be surprisingly difficult. Many airplanes still use traditional headphone jacks, and little ones aren't usually ready for earbuds.
The Bandou Original Toddler Headphones have been our go-to since my daughter was only a few months old.
I love them because they're soft, comfortable, volume-limited, and offer both wired and Bluetooth options. They've also held a charge for us remarkably well over time.
As an unexpected bonus, when my daughter would fall asleep during flights, I could gently pull the headband over her eyes and use it as a makeshift eye mask.
When she was younger, a simple hair tie helped create a snugger fit.
Pack 'n Play Travel Mattress
Sleep can make or break a family vacation.
For several trips, we intentionally booked hotels and vacation rentals that provided Pack 'n Plays. No matter where we stayed, though, our daughter rarely slept well in them.
A friend pointed out that the mattress felt completely different from the crib mattress she was used to at home.
After some research, we purchased a foldable travel mattress to use with Pack 'n Plays. The difference was immediate. She slept comfortably, we slept better, and everyone enjoyed the trip more. After that first successful trip, we never looked back.
Final Thoughts
Every family travels differently, and what works for us may not work for yours. These are simply the products and systems that have helped make our travel days smoother, less stressful, and far more enjoyable.
If you're just starting your family travel journey, remember that you don't need every gadget on the market. You need the right things. A little preparation, a flexible mindset, and a handful of trusted essentials can go a long way.
The travel days may not always go perfectly, but the memories are worth it.
