Baby’s First Beach Trip: What We Packed for a Weekend in the Outer Banks
If you know me—or if you're new here and just following along—you'll quickly learn that vacation does not mean cramming as many activities as possible into a single day. We intentionally plan our adventures just as much as we plan our downtime.
Because of that, where I book a stay for my family matters. I'm not just looking for a place to sleep. Sometimes the stay itself is part of the experience.
Why We Chose the Outer Banks
For our daughter's first beach trip, she was four and a half months old. It was the first weekend in May, which is barely beach season in North Carolina, but we were celebrating our anniversary. Around here, our anniversary feels a little like a family birthday, so we want to celebrate together.
I found a charming beach house in Nags Head in the Outer Banks. I'd always wanted to visit the area, but this particular destination was inspired by one of my favorite authors, Rebecca Yarros.
A few years ago, while we were stationed at Fort Rucker, I discovered her Flight & Glory series and promptly binge-read every book. I've been a fan ever since and will happily read anything she publishes. (Welcome to my unofficial book club, friends—send me your favorite recommendations!)
In the final book of the series, one of the main characters moves to Nags Head. From that moment on, the destination earned a permanent spot on my travel bucket list.
Last year, we finally made it happen—and with a baby in tow! Double win.

Finding the Perfect Family-Friendly Beach House
The house we rented checked every box. It was located just two streets back from the ocean and came stocked with nearly everything we needed for a beach day, including chairs, toys, and even a wagon to haul it all.
After a day in the sun, we could relax in a cozy backyard complete with a fire pit for evening s'mores. It was exactly the type of low-stress family getaway we love.

Parents already know that taking a baby and small kids to the beach requires a little more planning than tossing a towel in the car and heading out the door. We needed a way to safely store formula, protect sensitive skin from the sun, and create a comfortable place for our daughter to relax throughout the day.

Armed with our beach gear and a grocery run from Fresh Market, we spent the day enjoying the shoreline without constantly trekking back and forth to the house.
One thing I've learned as a baby and toddler mom is that I'm a big fan of a contact nap out in the wild.
During her first year, our daughter napped everywhere: on the beach, in a carrier while we ran errands, by the pool, at restaurants and even at concerts. Don't get me wrong—she slept at home plenty, too. But we found that maintaining a similar nap schedule while remaining flexible allowed us to continue enjoying our day-to-day adventures.
For our family, that balance made travel feel much more manageable. I encourage you to be creative and find what works best for your family, but don’t let fear of change stop you from branching out.
Dinner with a View
After a day spent soaking up the ocean air, we walked to dinner from the house and enjoyed a wonderful meal at a restaurant right on the pier. The view of the Atlantic Ocean was spectacular and made for the perfect anniversary evening.
Of course, no beach vacation is complete without dessert. We finished the night with dessert from Surfin' Spoon Frozen Yogurt Bar, a unique local spot that's absolutely worth adding to your Outer Banks itinerary.
Final Thoughts
Our first beach trip with a baby wasn't perfect, but it was memorable in all the best ways. With a little preparation, a flexible mindset, and the right gear, we were able to enjoy a relaxing weekend together as a family.
